Nicholas Cage embraces the crazy and it makes the movie awesome.  If you close your eyes, Jay Baruchel sounds like a young Christian Slater. That might be helpful if you’re into that sort of thing. The basic plot is that Balthazar (Cage) needs to save the world with the help of his apprentice (Baruchel). That’s easy enough, right? Right. There are a lot of awesome special effects and despite it not being the best movie ever, everyone looks like they’re having a good time (even Monica Bellucci despite looking like she’s phoning it in). It’s good popcorn fare that features some awesome villains (who doesn’t love Alfred Molina and Alice Krige when they’re being bad?) and magic, what more could you ask for? Okay, don’t answer that and don’t think too hard. Just have fun.

This is a movie that grew on me. I mean, I realized it was terrible the first time I saw it. But I kept watching it again and again (well, kept having it on while doing laundry again and again), and I realized: I had fun with it. It was so…goofy.
